Chris Gilbert - Specialist Advanced Driving Instructor
Because of his driving history and instructional experience Chris was selected to give driver training to Prince William, Prince Harry, The Duchess of York,
The Duchess of Gloucester and The Earl of Ulster.
A Chris Gilbert Driving Day is a memorable experience and many
clients return several times.
**Very Important Consideration**
It is our view and experience that the very best people to teach advanced driving on
the public highway are Class 1 police advanced drivers who have many years of police operational driving experience, but more importantly, have experience as a Police Advanced Driving Instructor teaching Advanced Driving to police officers at a Police Driving School, such as the world famous Metropolitan Police Motor Driving School Hendon, where Chris served for 22 years of his 30 years service.
" I just wanted to say again Chris how much I enjoyed our driving day on Wednesday. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed being in a car quite so much. To have someone sitting next to you who has your advanced police driving skills and can talk you through positioning, speed, braking and general observation techniques and offer such high level of advice was really an eye-opener. The day has renewed
my enthusiasm for driving and encouraged me to continue to improve my driving skills. Many thanks again for all you taught me and for such enjoyable and
affable company". David Sanders. October 2015

Style of Instruction
Chris has a very relaxed, understanding and friendly style of instruction devoid of any sarcasm, his manner and delivery will help to create the best relaxed and calm teaching environment so that effective learning takes place. Chris likes to create a 'mobile classroom' and have short stops, invite questions and give feedback and encouragement. He has vast experience as a driver trainer and driving examiner allowing him to quickly assess and recognise your strengths and the areas which may require some development.
"In 2010 I was involved in a car accident in which my car was a write off and I received serious injuries. I have since suffered a loss of confidence and many anxious moments when I'm driving. After speaking with Chris on the phone I decided to book a day with him and my husband came too for moral support. I needn't have worried because Chris was a charming, kind, understanding gentleman and a superb instructor, who guided me through my problems. His explanations were clear and easy to understand and I learnt so much more about driving. My confidence has returned and I am no longer anxious behind the wheel. Thanks Chris,
I recommend you highly". Glenda Brown - Lincolnshire
What is a 'Driving Day'?
It is a day, or half a day, that will be tailored to suit your individual requirements and needs, be it back to basics or very top end advanced driving. The very best people to provide this service are police class 1 drivers with operational experience who have also been a Police Advanced Driving Instructor with years of experience at a Police Driving School. The objective is to improve your driving skills, knowledge of driving and have answered all the questions you have ever thought of. A 'Driving Day' is aimed at any driver with a full driving licence seeking to improve their driving skills. Chris welcomes nervous drivers and those who have lost confidence in driving for whatever reason.
We have had a number of parents contact us worried about their son or daughter's driving, particularly those who have recently passed their driving test. Chris is able
to help in these situations too.
Chris on a one to one basis, in your car, will instruct, coach and encourage you to achieve your goals. You can choose a half day or full day. However, Chris is very flexible so on the day you can increase or decrease your driving time. Charges relate accordingly.
Chris generally uses the roads he used for 22 years teaching police officers
advanced driving skills, so the roads are both enjoyable and challenging to drive. There are some excellent, instructional value driving roads in nearby Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
If you would like to join your husband, wife, son, daughter, partner or friend in the car as an observer, you are welcome to do so at no extra charge.
Consider sharing a full driving day with a friend, relative or colleague. Many driving instructor clients do this. Passive learning is a most effective way to learn by watching and listening the other person, then rotating. Validating the learning is best achieved as an observer in the back seat after having driven. All UK police driving schools use passive learning with three students. However, three sharing a single day is one too many!
Chris Gilbert - Specialist Advanced Driving Instructor
There are very few, if any, other driving instructors in the UK who have Chris's background and experience in driver training. Chris has been involved in driver
training since 1963, first teaching learner drivers as an RAC Registered and Ministry of Transport Approved Driving Instructor. Later, as a Metropolitan Police Sergeant, Class1 Driver and Advanced Driving Instructor, he covered over a million
instructional miles training police officers the art of safe high performance
pursuit and 999 driving in powerful cars on the public highway.
As a staff trainer at the world famous Metropolitan Police Motor Driving School
Hendon, Chris also trained many police class 1 drivers and civilian instructors
to become police advanced driving instructors.
Chris now specialises teaching members of the public, professional drivers,
DSA driving instructors and driving enthusiasts police advanced driving techniques based on Roadcraft, at normal speed.
McLaren 650s LHD
Clients arrive for their Driving Day with Chris driving a wide range of vehicles,
including everyday family vehicles, 4X4s, Ferrari, Maserati and Chris's all time favourites, the awesome McLaren 650s and the McLaren MP4-12c which Chris regularly instructs in. However, it matters not what type of vehicle you drive,
Chris has the experience and expertise to help you improve your driving skills.
In 1990 Chris was a member of a Government Home Office Working Party
tasked with updating the police driver's manual - Roadcraft. Most recently, he has been involved with the Police Foundation and TSO in updating the 2013 edition of Roadcraft. Chris currently serves as member of the Roadcraft Reflective Practitioners Group who meet regularly to ensure Roadcraft is kept fully up to date.
He also taught passenger coach (PCV) driving and large articulated goods vehicle (LGV) driving. Chris holds a DSA ADI grade 6, which is the highest grade awarded by the Driving Standards Agency to Driving Instructors. In fact, Chris has never held a lower grade of ADI Licence.
He was also a Police Advanced Driving Examiner, a LSD/RoSPA Driving Examiner and authorised by the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to conduct LGV and PCV driving test for police purposes. In 1991 Chris attended a one month course at DSA Cardington and was trained as a DSA Delegated PCV/LGV Driving Examiner.
